Main Purpose of Job:

The British High Commission in Singapore is part of a worldwide network of over 230 United Kingdom overseas missions, representing British security, prosperity, and consular interests overseas.

We are recruiting a Driver to join our highly professional Transport Team. The successful candidate will provide safe, reliable, and courteous driving services for the British High Commission, supporting the effective operation and care of official vehicles in line with internal policies and procedures.

As a strong team player with excellent customer service skills, you will transport colleagues and official visitors safely and punctually. You will be responsible for maintaining vehicles to a high standard and will have a good working knowledge of roads, government buildings, and key locations across Singapore.
In addition to core driving duties, you will support the smooth running of transport functions through accurate administration, coordination, and effective communication.

As one of two pool car drivers, you will work closely with the Transport Manager and the Flag Car Driver, and will occasionally be required to provide cover driving duties for the High Commissioner.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

  • Drive pool cars for all members of staff for daily journeys, as well as for visits by UK based VIPs.
  • Provide cover for the Flag Car Driver as required, as directed by the Transport Manager.
  • Deliver reliable, safe, and well planned transport services, with a strong focus on customer service.
  • Review daily transport bookings with the Transport Manager and other drivers to ensure strict adherence to the Transport Policy.
  • Provide driving and logistical support for official visitors to the British High Commission, including route planning, liaison with key stakeholders, and working effectively in fast paced and ambiguous environments during visits.
  • Ensure regular cleaning of all British High Commission vehicles, with additional cleaning undertaken ahead of major visits.
  • Arrange timely vehicle servicing and LTA inspections, escalating issues to the Transport Manager as required. Monitor deadlines for road tax and insurance, including obtaining and providing quotations.
  •  Process ERP and fuel card payments and receipts on a weekly basis, in consultation with the Transport Manager.
  •  Support the Transport Manager and Head of  Corporate Services on driving related policy updates and input into decisions on vehicle purchases.
  •  Provide ad hoc support to the Corporate Services Team as required.
  • Work collaboratively as part of the transport team.
  • Undertake driving courses or refresher training as required.

Language requirements: 

Proficient in EnglishEssential qualifications, skills and experience  

•    A valid Class 3 driving license with no points deducted and no serious traffic offenses on their record
•    A valid class 4 license will be desirable
•    Excellent knowledge of the road network and traffic system in Singapore
•    A good understanding of the Highway Code
•    Previous experience as a limousine or private hire driver is an advantage
•    A basic understanding of Microsoft Office, especially Outlook and Excel  (e.g. to check diaries, calculate Overtime payment)
•    Willingness to perform duties outside normal working hours when called upon. This may include weekdays, weekends and Public HolidaysDesirable qualifications, skills and experience  

  • Previous experience in an Embassy or Government environment is desirable but not necessary

Working patterns:

Normal working hours are 37.5 per week: 8:30AM to 5:00PM from Monday to Friday. The team operates a ‘core hours’ policy of 10:30AM to 2:30PM with individual flexibility around that.

Terms of service:

In addition to the duties which this job normally entails, you may from time to time be required to undertake additional or other duties as necessary to meet the needs of the High Commission, including playing a part in the corporate life of the mission and supporting any crisis response.

No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. You must have or be able to obtain a local work permit which we will sponsor.

Staff recruited locally by the British High Commission are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Singapore employment law.
